About the Picture
This romanticized vision of a dynamic landscape driven by forceful lines and undulating passages is a real place for me.
Whilst in no way a drawing from life, the landscape is that of Cleeve Hill, near the village of Bishops Cleeve (just outside
Cheltenham) where I grew up (from the age of 5-22). It is a bleak windswept few miles of common land, interrupted by wash
pools and ancient burial grounds (Bellars Knap). I have always felt strangely at home there, as the light draws low in winter.
This house on the hill is a wishful retreat, a contemplative home I visit whenever I can.
