About the Picture

The title Dead Beat has several connotations: the death of playful forms, a dreary desert, a lively after-life and a fake seriousness. A ghostly snake smiles on a barren tree; his apple has long since become a pair/pear and flown away (see top left hand of the picture). The graves of many other animals litter the landscape; a primary ghost holds court over the sombre happiness. An old guitar lies un-played in the sand. The image is a study in parody: how happy can I make a desert graveyard. Can you hear music playing?
