About the Picture

The head at the centre of the picture is surrounded by a series of faces representing different emotional states. He grinds his teeth, eyes dilated under the strain: "don't loose your head!" In turn each of the faces listed clockwise from the left signify the following situations: fear, sadness, confusion, embarrassment and despair. The ball of string unravelling towards the front of the picture represents the unravelling of the central head's emotional state. A sown wound in the top left and a ticking clock to the right emphasises the tension, and the pressure being applied in the struggle experienced by the subject when holding himself together.
