About the Picture

This small picture was devised in a moment of inspiration whilst working at the library desk at Goldsmiths. A doodle on a random scrap of paper became this, my most optimistic comment on childhood. An orphaned bird is held in the arms of a woman; she plays the part of a surrogate mother. Nothing remains of the bird's real parents except for a solitary feather. It is difficult for the young chick to adapt to his new surroundings; everything is strange and human. To get it to eat, another figure has disguised himself or herself as a bird. A fish has been caught and offered unconditionally to the young one.
